Our Story

Built by someone who lived it.

BeBetFree exists because the tools that could have helped me didn't exist when I needed them. So I built them.

The problem started quietly

I was 27, working late nights in a startup as a software developer, and I discovered sports betting apps. It started as something to do during games — a way to make a Tuesday night NBA matchup feel meaningful after a 12-hour shift. Twenty dollars here, fifty there. It felt like a hobby.

By the time I was 29, I was depositing $400 to $600 a week across five different platforms. I had burned through most of my savings, missed two rent payments in six months, and borrowed $8,000 from my father with a story about a car repair. I hadn't bought a car. I'd lost the money on a Thursday night parlay.

The thing about gambling addiction is that it's invisible. You don't slur your words. You don't smell like anything. You show up to work, you laugh at the right moments, and you spend every quiet hour watching your phone and thinking about odds. Nobody knew. That made it worse.

“I searched for an app that could help me track my recovery the same way a fitness app tracks a workout. I found nothing that felt like it was made for someone like me.”

Quitting changed everything — and nothing was easy

I quit on a Sunday. I deleted every app, blocked every site I could find, and told two people — my father, who already knew something was wrong, and my best friend. The first week was the hardest week of my life. Not because of the money — that was already gone. Because of the hours. I had built my entire daily structure around gambling, and without it, I didn't know what to do with myself at 9pm on a weeknight.

I looked for tools to help. I found resources for alcohol and drug addiction, which didn't quite fit. I found Gamblers Anonymous, which was valuable but not available at midnight when the urge hit hardest. I found a few generic habit trackers that had no understanding of what gambling recovery actually feels like.

What I wanted was something simple: a daily streak counter that made me feel something when I looked at it. A place to write about what I was going through. A savings calculator that showed me concretely what I was gaining back. A tool that understood my specific problem without making me feel like a case study.

So I built it myself

About eight months into my own recovery, I started building BeBetFree. I was a software developer — building things was how I processed problems. I started with the streak tracker, because watching that number grow was the most motivating thing I'd experienced. Then the savings calculator, because seeing $150/week compound into real money over months was genuinely astonishing to me.

The journal came later, because I started writing about my recovery and discovered it was the most effective tool I had. Getting thoughts out of my head and onto a screen made them smaller, more manageable. The urge relief tool came from the 2am moments — I needed something to interrupt the spiral before it built momentum.

BeBetFree is a bootstrapped, solo project. There are no investors. No growth-hacking playbook. No team of 50 people. It's me, building something I needed, for people who need it too. Every feature exists because someone in recovery — including me — found it genuinely useful.

What we stand for

Privacy First

Your recovery is yours. We never sell your data or share your story without permission.

Honest Tools

We don't use dark patterns, fake urgency, or manipulative design. We've had enough of that from betting apps.

Always Accessible

The core tools are free, forever. Recovery shouldn't have a paywall.

Where we are today

BeBetFree is growing slowly and intentionally. Every feature is tested against a simple question: does this actually help someone in recovery? If the answer isn't obviously yes, it doesn't ship.

I'm still the only developer. I'm still in recovery — over three years now. I still use BeBetFree every day. The product is built from the inside out, by someone who knows exactly what it feels like to need it at midnight on a Wednesday when the urge hits and there's nobody else awake to call.

If you're in the thick of it

I was too. The streak tracker, the journal, the savings counter — they're all here for you. Start free, no card required.
